Michigan's Unemployment Rate Remains High Amid National Job Market Concerns

Michigan's unemployment rate held steady at 5.3% in July, positioning the state with the fourth-highest jobless rate in the nation, trailing only Washington, D.C. (6%), California (5.5%), and Nevada (5.4%).

This figure surpasses the national average of 4.2%, highlighting the state's ongoing economic challenges.

According to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, both employment and unemployment saw slight decreases, leading to a minor reduction in the state's labor force.

Despite these fluctuations, the unemployment rate remained unchanged from the previous month.

Over the past year, Michigan's unemployment rate has risen by half a percentage point since July 2024.

The most significant gains were observed in private education and health services (22,000 additional jobs), government (13,000 more jobs), and construction (10,000 new positions).
