Albion Library Receives $100,000 for Historic Repairs
State preservation grant will address water damage, stabilize the Carnegie entrance and improve foundation drainage

Albion District Library has received a $100,000 state preservation grant to protect its historic 1919 Carnegie building from continuing water damage.
The award comes through Michigan’s Rural Heritage Partnership Grant Program and represents the highest grant amount available through the program.
Water infiltration has damaged both the interior and exterior of the century-old library building at 501 S. Superior St.
The first phase of work will stabilize and rehabilitate the deteriorating front entrance while correcting drainage problems along the foundation.
Library leaders view the repairs as the beginning of a broader effort focused on accessibility, long-term stability and resilience.
Stopping the water is the immediate priority because delaying the work could allow deterioration to spread through a building that remains an active community resource.
The original Carnegie library was built in 1919 with a $17,500 grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation.
An addition completed in 1975 tripled the building’s square footage and added an accessible entrance and elevator service.
The State Historic Preservation Office awarded approximately $673,000 to eight rural Michigan preservation projects in this funding round.
Grants ranged from $51,000 to $100,000 and supported properties in eight counties, including Calhoun County.
The program focuses on buildings listed individually or as contributing properties in the National Register of Historic Places.
Funding is supported by the National Park Service’s Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grants Program.
For Albion, the award protects more than brick and mortar.
The library remains a downtown anchor that provides reading materials, technology, children’s services, local history resources and gathering space for the community.
Library Director Cynthia Stanczak said the grant will help address the painful damage caused by water intrusion and move the long-awaited repairs forward.
