Battle Creek Tabernacle Celebrates 100 Years

Battle Creek’s historic Seventh-day Adventist Tabernacle is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its current building with public programs continuing through October 10.

The church stands at 264 W. Michigan Ave., where Adventist congregations have worshiped since the 1800s.

The centennial observance began October 2 with hymns and church history, followed by an October 3 service featuring Erton Köhler, president of the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The weeklong celebration includes guest speakers, former pastors, musical performances and free dinners after services on both Saturdays.

Organizers are inviting former members, community neighbors and visitors to take part in the anniversary.

The current Tabernacle was dedicated on October 9, 1926, four years after fire destroyed the earlier Dime Tabernacle.

That earlier building received its name because members and supporters contributed dimes to help finance its construction.

One physical link to the former church still remains.

The Dime Tabernacle’s iron bell survived the 1922 fire, was restored in 2018 and now stands behind the current church connected to its working clock.

The sanctuary also contains a grand piano originally custom designed for Marjorie Merriweather Post, daughter of cereal entrepreneur C.W. Post.

The Tabernacle purchased the piano through an estate sale in 1914, making it another direct connection between the congregation and Battle Creek’s wider history.

A renovation completed in 2019 refreshed the building’s main level and balcony while preserving its traditional character.

The centennial is more than a church milestone because the building has remained part of the downtown Battle Creek landscape through a full century of community change.

Visitors can review the remaining schedule and historical material on the official centennial website before attending.
