Calhoun County Food Assistance Map Helps Seniors Find Support

A new interactive Food Resources Map gives Calhoun County seniors, caregivers and other residents a simpler way to locate nearby food assistance.

Calhoun County Senior Services created the mobile-friendly tool with the county’s Geographic Information Services team.

The map brings local food-resource information together instead of requiring residents to search across multiple organizations and websites.

Users can open the map on a phone, tablet or computer and explore available resources across Calhoun County.

The project is intended to make practical help easier to find for older adults who may face transportation, mobility or technology barriers.

A clear map can turn a confusing search into a manageable next step.

Calhoun County Senior Services received a Thome Aging Well Innovation Grant in 2024 to help fund development.

The project focuses on food insecurity among older residents while remaining useful to other community members seeking assistance.

County partners can also use the information to identify neighborhoods where additional services may be needed.

The launch adds a new navigation tool to the county’s existing senior-support network.

Senior Services administers local Senior Millage resources, connects residents with funded programs and provides Medicare and Medicaid counseling.

Its broader list of Senior Millage-funded services includes transportation, home support, benefits counseling, health services and other assistance.

The county’s GIS team provides mapping and location-based information for public programs and community planning.

Combining GIS with a food-resource directory makes the information easier to view geographically and on a mobile device.

The map is a starting point, not a guarantee that every program has immediate availability.

Residents should contact a listed provider before traveling to confirm hours, eligibility rules, required documents and current supplies.

People who need additional help can contact Calhoun County Senior Services at 269-781-0846.

Michigan 211 also maintains a statewide referral service for food, housing, utility and other community needs.

The new map matters because access is not only about whether a service exists.

Residents must also be able to find it, understand it and determine how to reach it.

Putting reliable locations in one searchable view can help families and caseworkers make faster, better-informed connections.

Who can use the Calhoun County Food Resources Map?

The tool was developed with older adults in mind, but seniors, caregivers and other community members can use it to explore food-assistance resources.

Does the food map work on a phone?

Yes, county officials say the interactive map is fully functional on mobile devices as well as computers.

Where can Calhoun County seniors get personal help?

Residents can contact Calhoun County Senior Services at 269-781-0846 for guidance and connections to senior programs.
