Calhoun County Ramps Up Traffic Enforcement During Construction Season

Drivers in Calhoun County can expect to see increased traffic enforcement as road construction season gets underway and warmer weather brings more pedestrians, cyclists, and outdoor activity to local roadways.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office announced the increased enforcement efforts in a community announcement, noting that construction across the county is creating detours, delays, and heavier traffic on alternate routes.

Why Enforcement Is Increasing

As drivers navigate around construction zones, rural roads and residential neighborhoods are seeing increased traffic volumes. This creates added risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and families enjoying time outdoors during the spring and summer months.

"A moment of caution can prevent a serious incident," Sheriff Steve Hinkley said in the announcement. "As you enjoy everything Calhoun County has to offer, from time at the lakes and rivers to evening walks and bike rides, I encourage you to slow down and stay focused behind the wheel."

Current Road Construction Projects

The Calhoun County Road Department has multiple projects underway for the 2026 construction season, including road resurfacing, tree removals, and chip seal operations across several townships.

Key projects include work on Homer Road in Eckford Township, 6 Mile Road in Emmett and Leroy/Newton Townships, Struwin Road in Pennfield Township, and Michigan Avenue in Marengo and Sheridan Townships.

For real-time updates on road conditions and construction zones, drivers can check Mi Drive, the Michigan Department of Transportation's traffic and construction information website.

Safety Tips for Drivers

The Sheriff's Office offered several reminders to help keep everyone safe on the roads:

Plan ahead: Check your route and allow extra time for construction-related delays.

Respect detours: Follow posted routes and avoid cutting through neighborhoods.

Stay focused: Eliminate distractions and keep your attention on the road.

Drive with patience: A little extra time and courtesy can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.

"Let's work together to make this a safe and enjoyable season in Calhoun County," Hinkley said. "Your actions behind the wheel truly make a difference."
