DENSO Marks 40 Years With $250,000 Battle Creek Housing Gift
The manufacturer’s donation supports a local goal to build or rehabilitate 1,000 homes by 2035

DENSO Manufacturing Michigan marked 40 years in Battle Creek with a $250,000 donation to the Battle Creek Housing Fund. The October 7 gift connects one of the area’s largest employers with a local effort to expand and improve the city’s housing supply. The fund supports affordable, workforce and market-rate housing and has a goal of building or rehabilitating 1,000 homes by 2035.
DENSO began production in Battle Creek in 1986 as the company’s first manufacturing operation in North America. The campus has grown from an early goal of roughly 200 employees to more than 2,000 team members. Its 1.38 million-square-foot operation produces automotive thermal technologies for manufacturers across North America. That long industrial history gives the housing contribution added local weight.
The Battle Creek Housing Fund is led through a partnership involving Local Initiatives Support Corporation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the City of Battle Creek and Battle Creek Unlimited. The partners are working across different housing needs rather than limiting the effort to a single price point or development type. DENSO said its contribution reflects gratitude to the community and a desire to make affordable housing more accessible locally.
The anniversary also highlighted continued investment inside the plant. Michigan supported a $63 million DENSO project in 2023 to retool production space for advanced technologies serving electrified vehicles. A new production line enabled by that investment is now operating and supplying heating, ventilation and air-conditioning technology to a major automaker.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga, Battle Creek Mayor Mark Behnke and company leaders attended the anniversary event. DENSO identified the Battle Creek location as Calhoun County’s largest employer and a key part of its North American manufacturing network. The donation links workforce stability with the practical challenge of finding attainable homes.
Housing affects whether employers can recruit and retain workers, whether families can remain in the city and whether neighborhoods can support long-term growth. The fund’s 2035 target gives residents a measurable benchmark for following how contributions translate into construction and rehabilitation. Specific projects funded by DENSO’s contribution were not identified in the announcement.
The company’s Battle Creek history includes plant expansions, workforce training investments and community partnerships over four decades. The anniversary celebrated that record while placing housing among the community needs DENSO chose to support next. Residents can follow the fund’s partner organizations for future project and investment updates.
