Calhoun County Sheriff's Office recovers handgun and victim's phone during early morning incident on Northeast Capital Avenue
Four suspects are in custody following an assault and robbery in Pennfield Township early Thursday morning. The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office responded to Northeast Capital Avenue just after 12:30 a.m. on April 9, 2026, for a report of a shooting victim.
Deputies found a man in a parking lot who had been attacked by three male subjects who exited a light-colored SUV. The assailants fired an Orbeez-style gel blaster at the victim, physically assaulted him, and stole his phone before fleeing the scene.
Incident Details:
A CCSO deputy later spotted a vehicle matching the description near Emmett Street and Fremont Street in Battle Creek. The SUV pulled into a residence, and deputies made contact with four occupants.
The subjects confirmed that gel blasters were in the vehicle. All four were detained without incident. A search of the SUV yielded a .40 caliber Glock handgun under a seat and gel pellets consistent with evidence found at the crime scene.
Video surveillance from a nearby business confirmed the involvement of the detained subjects. The victim's stolen phone was also recovered from the vehicle.
All four suspects were lodged in the Calhoun County Jail. Names are being withheld pending arraignment. The investigation continues as prosecutors review charges related to robbery, aggravated assault with a weapon, and concealed weapon violations.
