Battl Creek, MI: One in Critical Condition After Hit-and-Run; Driver Faces Charges, Drunk Driving Suspected

Battle Creek incident leaves pedestrian severely injured; 19-year-old driver arrested

Exclusive

A tragic hit-and-run incident late Saturday night in Battle Creek has left a 33-year-old resident in critical condition, while a 19-year-old driver faces multiple charges, including operating while intoxicated.

According to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, the collision occurred around 11:04 p.m. on North Avenue near East Coolidge Avenue. Witnesses reported that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed while crossing the street. The driver fled the scene immediately after the impact.

Emergency responders from the Pennfield Township Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance arrived promptly, providing critical care before transporting the victim to a local hospital. The individual remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Thanks to detailed descriptions from bystanders, authorities were able to locate the suspect's vehicle on Eastwood Drive near 6 Mile Road. The car exhibited damage consistent with the crash. The driver, a 19-year-old man from Climax Township, was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect is facing several charges, including reckless driving causing great bodily harm, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and failure to stop and identify at a personal injury accident.

This incident underscores a troubling pattern of reckless and impaired driving in the Battle Creek area. In April 2025, a 30-year-old Grand Rapids man was arrested after crashing his minivan into a Battle Creek home while allegedly under the influence. Fortunately, the 70-year-old resident inside was unharmed. Additionally, in July 2025, an 18-year-old was killed, and a 17-year-old girl was critically injured in a rollover crash in Battle Creek, with alcohol and reckless driving cited as contributing factors.

Authorities continue to investigate Saturday's hit-and-run and urge anyone with information to come forward. Community members are reminded of the severe consequences of impaired and reckless driving and are encouraged to prioritize safety on the roads.
