Grand Rapids' own Gabe Unick to compete on the global sumo stage in Thailand |
Gabe Unick, a dedicated sumo wrestler from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is set to represent the United States at the upcoming World Sumo Championships in Thailand this September.
Unick's journey into sumo began over a decade ago, driven by a passion for the sport's rich traditions and physical demands.
In 2018, he co-founded the Grand Rapids Sumo Club, providing a platform for local enthusiasts to engage with this ancient Japanese sport.
His commitment has led to significant achievements, including a first-place finish in the middleweight division at the national championships earlier this year.
Reflecting on his victory, Unick expressed, "I was on that cusp for so long and finally getting over the edge and winning that title, it was a huge sigh of relief, honestly. At the end of the day, I’m just grateful to be there and have the opportunity."
Now, Unick is preparing to compete on the international stage at the World Sumo Championships, scheduled for September 13-14, 2025, at Rangsit University near Bangkok.
To support his journey, Unick has launched a fundraiser to help cover travel expenses.
Any additional funds raised will be reinvested into the Grand Rapids Sumo Club and the broader sumo community.
For those interested in supporting Unick's endeavor, contributions can be made through his fundraising campaign.
As Unick embarks on this exciting chapter, the Grand Rapids community stands behind him, proud to see one of their own representing the nation on the world sumo stage. |
