Michigan Native Billy Strings Breaks Leg at Virginia Concert

Billy Strings, the two-time Grammy Award-winning bluegrass musician from Ionia, Michigan, broke his leg during a concert in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

Strings confirmed the injury on social media Sunday, sharing X-ray images on his official website and Instagram that showed broken tibia and fibula bones just above his ankle. The injury occurred while attempting a skateboard trick backstage at John Paul Jones Arena, according to reports from Live For Live Music and CVILLE Right Now.

Born William Lee Apostol, Strings grew up in Ionia and graduated from Douglas R. Welch High School before moving to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his music career. He has become one of the most acclaimed musicians in modern bluegrass.

Strings has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, winning Best Bluegrass Album in 2021 for "Home" and again in 2025 for "Live Vol. 1." His 2024 album "Highway Prayers" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's All-Genre Top Album Sales Chart, the first time a bluegrass album achieved that milestone in 22 years.

Upcoming Michigan Shows

Despite the injury, fans are hopeful Strings will recover in time for his scheduled performances at the Ionia Fairgrounds on August 28-29, 2026. The concert is part of his summer tour and will feature Greensky Bluegrass, Leftover Salmon, Sierra Hull, and other artists.

Tickets for the Ionia shows became available February 13 through his official website. The Ionia Free Fair, one of the oldest and largest fairs in the United States, runs July 16-25, 2026.
