Pedestrian crashes in Battle Creek leave one dead, one critical
Police are seeking the driver in one of two late-night incidents reported minutes apart

Two late-night pedestrian crashes reported only minutes apart in Battle Creek left one man dead and another critically injured. The Battle Creek Police Department said both incidents happened Friday, October 2, and remain under review by its Traffic Unit. The short gap between the calls created a difficult night for first responders and two families waiting for answers.
The first crash was reported at about 10:14 p.m. near Cliff Street and Mott Street. Police said a 40-year-old man was in the roadway when a vehicle struck him and left the scene. The man was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Investigators are still working to identify the vehicle and its driver.
About 12 minutes later, officers were called to a second crash near Beckley Road and Capital Avenue SW. Police said a 56-year-old man stepped into the roadway and was hit by a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old woman. The pedestrian later died from his injuries. Officials said the driver in that second incident is not currently facing charges.
The two cases are separate, but both underscore the danger of nighttime travel for people on foot. Michigan pedestrian-safety guidance urges walkers to use sidewalks when available, cross at corners and stay visible after dark. The same guidance reminds drivers to obey speed limits, avoid distractions and watch carefully at intersections. Those reminders do not determine fault in either Battle Creek case, which depends on evidence gathered by investigators.
The hit-and-run investigation needs public help because the first vehicle left before officers could identify it. Anyone who saw the crash, recorded nearby traffic or has information about a damaged vehicle should preserve that material. Tips may be given directly to the Battle Creek Police Detective Bureau or anonymously through Silent Observer. Residents should not post unverified accusations or attempt to confront a suspected driver.
For the community, the immediate focus is on the critically injured man, the family of the person who died and a complete accounting of both incidents. Police had not released the pedestrians’ names in the official update. The investigation could produce additional details as officers review evidence and speak with witnesses.
When did the two Battle Creek pedestrian crashes happen? Police said the first was reported at 10:14 p.m. and the second at 10:26 p.m. on Friday, October 2.
Is the driver in the fatal crash facing charges? Police said the 18-year-old driver in the second crash is not currently facing charges.
