Police standoff in Battle Creek ends with arrest after cruiser theft

An early-morning police response in Battle Creek escalated from an attempted break-in call to the theft of a patrol vehicle, a pursuit and a standoff.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old man after negotiators persuaded him to surrender near Meachem Avenue and Kedzie Court.

The episode began shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, October 5, in the 500 block of Capital Avenue SW.

Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority sent officers to a reported breaking and entering after a caller said a suspect had left the area.

The Battle Creek Police Department said officers located the man near Eldred Street and Capital Avenue SW carrying a hammer.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man became hostile and said officers would have to shoot him because he would not return to jail.

Police said officers created distance, attempted de-escalation and used less-lethal options that did not stop the encounter.

The man then allegedly entered an unoccupied patrol vehicle and drove away.

A pursuit followed through city streets.

Officers disabled the stolen cruiser near Meachem Avenue and Kedzie Court, where the man remained inside.

Negotiators established contact and eventually secured a surrender.

The man sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Calhoun County Jail after treatment.

An officer involved in a collision with another police vehicle during the response was treated and released at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.

No deaths were reported in the incident.

Police said they intend to seek several charges, including attempted breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools, fleeing and eluding, patrol vehicle theft, destruction of police property, resisting arrest and aggravated assault of an officer.

Those are requested charges, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The exact charging decision belongs to prosecutors after they review the investigative record.

Police Chief Shannon Bagley said the department will review the response for policy compliance, training needs and officer wellness.

That review is distinct from the criminal investigation and can continue even after a suspect is jailed.

Battle Creek previously warned residents about an increase in vehicle thefts, though officials have not connected that broader pattern to this encounter.

The incident remains under investigation, and details could change as reports, video and witness accounts are examined.

Residents should rely on verified updates and avoid circulating speculation about the people involved.

The public account did not identify the suspect by name.
