Replica Pistol Found at Battle Creek Career Center

A reported weapon at the Calhoun Area Career Center prompted a swift response on September 30th, 2026, before deputies determined the item was a replica pistol.

School personnel alerted the center’s school resource deputy at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving information that a student might have a firearm.

Deputies and school staff located the 16-year-old Battle Creek student and recovered an object that looked like a firearm but was later identified as a replica with no markings showing it was not real.

Officials said the situation was resolved quickly and there was no continuing threat to students, staff or nearby residents.

The student was released to their parents, while school administrators imposed discipline that included suspension.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said it would submit a juvenile petition alleging a violation of Michigan’s weapons-free school-zone law.

The distinction between a real firearm and a replica may become clear only after officers secure the scene, which is why reports of weapons at schools trigger urgent precautions.

The incident also underscores the role of school resource officers, who connect school administrators with law enforcement when a report requires immediate investigation.

At the Career Center, the assigned deputy worked directly with staff to find the student and remove the suspected weapon.

No injuries were reported, and classes were not described as facing an ongoing danger after the item was recovered.

Authorities reminded families that students should never bring firearms or realistic replicas to school because either can prompt an emergency response and serious legal or disciplinary consequences.

They also encouraged parents and guardians to watch for emotional distress or behavioral concerns and to seek support early when a young person appears to be struggling.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remained open and asked anyone with information to contact its investigators or submit an anonymous tip through Silent Observer.
