Washington Avenue Bridge Reopens to Battle Creek Traffic
The $7.6 million M-89 rebuilding project restores a key connection after a months-long closure

Traffic is moving again across the Washington Avenue bridge in Battle Creek after a months-long rebuilding project finished ahead of its target date.
The M-89 bridge over the Battle Creek River reopened this week, restoring a direct connection between Dickman Road and Michigan Avenue.
The Michigan Department of Transportation closed the bridge in March for a project valued at approximately $7.6 million.
Work included rebuilding and repairing the bridge, replacing approaches, improving drainage, installing guardrail and signals, relocating a water main and adding pavement markings.
MDOT had identified October 9 as the estimated end of the closure, and the route was available to drivers before that deadline.
The reopening removes a long-running detour near downtown and reconnects a corridor used by residents, businesses and visitors.
Drivers should still stay attentive to any final site activity, changing lane conditions or short-term work-zone controls around the approaches.
The Michigan Department of Transportation posts current road and lane information through its Mi Drive system, which is useful for checking conditions before traveling.
The City of Battle Creek also publishes traffic advisories and construction notices affecting local streets.
For people who changed their routine during the closure, the reopening means the Washington Avenue crossing can return to normal trip planning.
The completed project represents a major infrastructure investment on the west side of downtown Battle Creek.
