Whitmer Urges Trump to Reconsider Tariffs Threatening Michigan Auto Jobs

Governor Highlights Economic Risks to State's Manufacturing Sector

In a private meeting at the White House, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer pressed President Donald Trump to reassess his administration's tariff policies, emphasizing their detrimental impact on Michigan's vital automotive industry.

Armed with a detailed slide presentation, Whitmer underscored that the tariffs—imposing up to 50% on steel and aluminum and 25-30% on auto parts—are jeopardizing nearly 600,000 manufacturing jobs in the state.

She highlighted that since Trump's return to office, Michigan has lost 7,500 manufacturing positions, a trend she attributes to these trade measures.

Major automakers like General Motors and Ford have reported significant financial setbacks due to the tariffs.

In the second quarter alone, Ford faced $800 million in tariff-related costs, while GM reported a $1.1 billion impact.

These expenses hinder their ability to reinvest in domestic operations, a goal the administration has championed.

Despite Whitmer's efforts, the president did not commit to any policy changes during their discussion.

Trump maintains that the tariffs are designed to bolster American manufacturing and open foreign markets to U.S. products.

However, industry leaders continue to warn that these policies may reduce global competitiveness and lead to further job losses.

Whitmer's proactive approach reflects her commitment to safeguarding Michigan's economic interests amid ongoing trade disputes.

As the state grapples with the repercussions of these tariffs, the governor's advocacy underscores the urgent need for policies that support, rather than hinder, the automotive sector.
