Battle Creek Whitewater Inc. Leads Kalamazoo River Restoration Efforts

Battle Creek Whitewater Inc. is leading a transformative initiative to restore the Kalamazoo River to its natural state, aiming to rejuvenate downtown Battle Creek.

In the early 20th century, the area known as "The Bottoms"—a vibrant African American community—frequently faced flooding due to the convergence of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Rivers.

After a significant flood in 1947 halted commerce for over a week, the city implemented the "Cement River project," encasing the river in concrete to control flooding.

While this solution prevented floods, it led to the displacement of residents and destruction of natural habitats.

Today, the aging concrete channel is both an eyesore and an ecological concern.

Modern flood management techniques offer alternatives that can protect the city while preserving natural habitats.

Restoring the Kalamazoo River would transform it into a living waterway accessible to both humans and wildlife.

Recent developments bolster this vision.

In April 2025, the city partnered with an engineering firm to develop a conceptual plan for the river's naturalization.

This plan includes removing the Monroe Street Dam, replacing the concrete channel with flood-tolerant vegetation, and creating a revitalized river corridor that serves as a community amenity.

Community input is vital to this project.

Residents are encouraged to participate in surveys and meetings to share their visions for the river's future.

Suggestions range from creating whitewater parks that could bring copetitions and tourism, to developing green spaces and enhancing recreational opportunities.

Despite the project's promising vision, some residents remain skeptical about its feasibility and potential impact.

Pastor Monique French, chair of the North Central Neighborhood Planning Council, expressed hope for progress, stating, "I do believe that economic development is good for the neighborhood. It's good for the economy as well as the neighborhood."
