Battle Creek's Riverside Golf Club Faces Potential Rezoning for Mixed-Use Development |
City officials to decide on transforming historic golf course into residential and industrial spaces |
The Riverside Golf Club & Banquet Center, a cherished landmark in Battle Creek for nearly a century, may soon undergo a significant transformation. City officials are slated to decide next month on a rezoning proposal that could repurpose the 134-acre property into a mixed-use development featuring residential and industrial spaces.
The property, located at 245 E Columbia Avenue, is currently listed for sale at $1.899 million. The proposed redevelopment aims to address the city's pressing need for housing and to support industrial growth, particularly in light of the new BlueOval Battery Park in nearby Marshall.
During a recent community meeting, residents expressed mixed feelings about the potential changes. While some welcome the prospect of new housing, others are concerned about the impact of industrial development on their neighborhoods. Planning Administrator Darcy Schmitt acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing the importance of community input in shaping the project's direction.
The city's Master Plan, adopted in 2018, designates the golf course area for residential use. However, Schmitt noted that the plan serves as a guide rather than a strict mandate, allowing flexibility to adapt to the city's evolving needs.
If the rezoning is approved, the development could provide much-needed housing options and create new job opportunities, contributing to Battle Creek's economic growth. The planning commission is expected to make its recommendation to city leaders by mid-September.
As the community awaits the decision, many golfers are taking what could be their final rounds at Riverside, reflecting on the course's rich history and its potential new chapter. |
