Battle Creek is in for classic Michigan weather whiplash this week, with temperatures swinging nearly 31 degrees and a shot at a record-breaking 72°F.

Wednesday’s mild 60°F and cloudy skies give way to Thursday’s surge near 69°F — but a rapid cold front could bring a brief rain-snow mix overnight, with little to no accumulation expected.

Friday brings a dramatic drop, with highs barely reaching 40°F and lingering chill through Saturday, when lows dip to 25°F.

Thankfully, the chill fades quickly as Sunday warms up.

By Monday, temperatures rebound to a springlike 67°F, leading into Tuesday’s possible 72°F high — which is 20 degrees above normal and among Battle Creek’s warmest late-March days on record.

Locals should keep umbrellas and jackets handy for wild swings—and enjoy the sunshine between the surprises!

Michigan drivers are feeling the pressure as gas prices surge to their highest level since August 2023.

The statewide average for regular gas now stands at $4.09 per gallon, according to AAA Michigan, marking a sharp 56-cent jump from last week.

For many in Battle Creek and beyond, the rising cost means every fill-up hits the household budget a bit harder.

With a typical 15-gallon tank, drivers are paying around $59—about $5 more than just a week ago.

Local families, commuters, and small businesses all feel the ripple effect, as higher fuel prices can influence everything from grocery bills to delivery costs.

This increase is tied to refinery maintenance, the seasonal switch to summer fuel blends, and shifts in global oil markets.

While Calhoun County drivers fare slightly better, averaging $3.86 a gallon, the climb is raising concerns for everyone on the road.

Originally set for March 16, the project was delayed as contractor Hoffman Bros. helped with tornado cleanup.

The city now plans to start construction on March 23.

This extensive upgrade will improve water mains, remove lead and galvanized service lines, and restore streets and sidewalks on Lathrop Avenue, Post Avenue, and Douglas Street.

Work will unfold over two construction seasons, with about 75% finished by October 31, 2026, and final touches in spring and summer 2027.

Residents are urged to return their Lead Service Consent Form to avoid service interruptions.

When Courtney Hoover lost his grandmother Bessie Mae in 2019, he could have let grief consume him. Instead, he chose to honor her memory by becoming the kind of person she always believed he could be.

Bessie Mae was the kind of woman who defined community. She was charitable to a fault, always ready to help a neighbor or family member in need. But she was also clear about her boundaries.

As Hoover recalls, she told him directly: "As long as you're doing the wrong thing, I won't support you, but if you do the right thing, I got you."
