Riverside Golf Club Faces Potential Transformation Amid Rezoning Proposal |
Historic Battle Creek course may give way to industrial and residential development |
The future of Riverside Golf Club & Banquet Center, a nearly century-old landmark in Battle Creek, hangs in the balance as city officials consider a rezoning proposal that could lead to its redevelopment.
Interstate Capital Investments, a private equity firm specializing in industrial land development, has submitted an application to rezone the property. Their vision includes transforming the 99-year-old golf course into a mixed-use area featuring light industrial facilities, commercial offices, and residential units.
The Battle Creek Planning Commission is set to discuss this proposal during its regular meeting on September 24. A public hearing will be held on the same date, providing community members an opportunity to voice their opinions. If the commission recommends approval, the matter will advance to the City Commission for further deliberation and a subsequent public hearing.
According to Travis Sullivan, the city's Planning and Zoning Administrator, the rezoning request is conditional. This means the applicant has voluntarily proposed specific conditions to make the zoning change more acceptable to the local government and community. Sullivan emphasized that the city cannot impose additional conditions beyond those offered by the applicant.
Local residents have expressed concerns about the potential loss of the historic golf course and the impact of industrial development in a primarily residential area. During an informational meeting, community members voiced apprehensions regarding increased traffic, noise, and the preservation of green space.
Zach Rutherford, General Manager of Riverside Golf Club, stated that employees have not received updates regarding the property's future. "For now, we're status quo and planning our events and calendar for next year," Rutherford said. The golf course typically closes in late October, depending on weather conditions, while the banquet facility remains operational year-round.
As the rezoning process unfolds, the community remains engaged, awaiting decisions that could significantly alter the landscape of Battle Creek and the legacy of Riverside Golf Club. |
