AG Nessel Warns of Potential National Guard Deployment to Michigan Amid Federal Tensions

Attorney General Dana Nessel expresses concern over possible military presence in Michigan cities

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has raised alarms about the potential deployment of the National Guard to Michigan, following recent federal actions in neighboring states.

In a recent statement, Nessel emphasized the gravity of such a move, stating, "I think people need to be aware of this, concerned about it, and understand why it's so dangerous to have the military policing our United States cities."

Her comments come in the wake of a federal judge in Chicago temporarily blocking the Trump administration's attempt to deploy National Guard troops in Illinois. The court determined that such a deployment could escalate tensions rather than protect federal interests.

Despite these legal challenges, Vice President JD Vance has extended an offer to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to send National Guard troops to Detroit, citing concerns over crime rates. However, local leaders and community organizations have expressed strong opposition to this proposal.

Maurice "Pastor Mo" Hardwick, founder of the Live in Peace Movement, stated, "Vice President Vance, thank you, but no. Detroit is moving in an upward swing of bringing down the violence."

Recent data supports this assertion. As of September 30, 2025, Detroit has seen a 15% decrease in homicides compared to the same period in 2024, with non-fatal shootings and carjackings also dropping by over 20%.

Community leaders attribute these improvements to strengthened partnerships between local and federal law enforcement, as well as the expansion of Community Violence Intervention programs.

Reflecting on past experiences, Sandra Turner-Handy, executive director of the Denby Neighborhood Alliance, recalled the 1967 deployment of the National Guard in Detroit, stating, "We were mistreated. I saw people just slammed up against walls, you know, and I'm a 10-year-old child watching this in my community."

In response to the potential federal intervention, Nessel has indicated her readiness to take legal action to prevent the deployment of the National Guard in Michigan, asserting, "I will do anything and everything I can to protect the people of the state of Michigan, and that includes from federal trespasses by the Trump administration."

As the situation develops, Michigan officials and community leaders continue to advocate for local solutions to address crime, emphasizing the importance of community-driven initiatives over federal military intervention.
