Swift action by BCFD contains blaze; two cats perish in the incident |
In the early hours of Saturday, July 12, the Battle Creek Fire Department (BCFD), alongside the Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) and LifeCare Ambulance, responded to a residential structure fire on Capital Avenue NE.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., BCFD's Car 3 arrived within four minutes of the initial call to find flames engulfing the front porch of a two-story wood-frame home, rapidly extending into the second floor and attic.
Rescue 2 deployed a hose line to extinguish the main body of fire on the front porch, while Engine 3 assisted with hose line placement and conducted a search for occupants on the first floor.
Engine 1 proceeded to the second floor to search for occupants and check for fire extension.
Engines 4 and 5, along with Rescue 6, provided support functions.
Upon arrival, BCFD, with assistance from BCPD, confirmed that all human occupants had safely evacuated.
Tragically, two cats were unable to escape from the second floor and perished in the fire.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 20 minutes.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated on the front porch.
The BCFD Fire Marshal's office is currently investigating the exact cause.
The property, owned by Ahmed Khalil, sustained an estimated $50,000 in structural damage and $10,000 in content loss.
This incident underscores the importance of fire safety measures and the swift response of our local emergency services.
Residents are reminded to ensure that smoke detectors are functioning properly and to have an emergency evacuation plan in place.
