A 23-year-old man from Battle Creek is set to be arraigned on multiple charges following a shooting near Western Michigan University that left five individuals injured early Saturday morning.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) reported that the incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of West Michigan Avenue, near the intersection with Howard Street. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his heel and a grazing wound. Three 23-year-old men later sought medical attention for gunshot wounds, one to the stomach and two to their feet. Additionally, a 21-year-old man sustained minor facial injuries from debris but was not struck by gunfire.
All five victims received treatment at local hospitals and have since been released. Notably, none of the injured individuals are believed to be students at nearby colleges or universities.
The Battle Creek man was arrested on the morning of the incident for weapons violations and conditional bond violations. He is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday. At this time, authorities do not believe he was the shooter.
In a statement, KDPS emphasized the gravity of the situation: "This was a reckless act that endangered dozens of people. Incidents like this have no place in our community, and we will use every resource available to identify those responsible and bring them to justice."
