Battle Creek Officer Dismissed After Off-Duty Gun Incident in Livonia |
Internal Investigation Leads to Termination Following May Incident |
In a significant development, the Battle Creek Police Department has terminated Officer Hunter Barnett after an off-duty incident in May where he allegedly pointed a firearm at a fellow officer.
The event occurred on May 16 at a Holiday Inn Express in Livonia, where both officers were staying while attending a training course at Schoolcraft College. The specific course remains unspecified.
According to court documents, Barnett, while visibly impaired after consuming alcohol, intentionally pointed a gun at his colleague without malice. He now faces misdemeanor charges, including firearm possession while under the influence and aiming without malice. Each charge carries potential penalties of up to 93 days in jail, fines up to $500, and possible weapon forfeiture.
Chief Shannon Bagley confirmed that following an internal investigation, Barnett was dismissed from the department in September. Barnett is currently out on a $1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Efforts to reach Barnett's attorney for comment have been unsuccessful.
This incident underscores the importance of responsible firearm handling, especially among law enforcement personnel, and highlights the department's commitment to maintaining professional standards. |
