Battle Creek authorities have apprehended 18-year-old Diondre Sanders Jr. in connection with the recent shooting near Battle Creek Central High School.
The incident, which occurred on September 8, involved a confrontation between individuals in a vehicle and two students on foot.
During the altercation, an undetermined number of shots were fired, resulting in a student bystander sustaining a non-life-threatening injury.
The injured student received treatment and was subsequently released.
Sanders faces multiple charges, including assault with intent to commit murder, felony firearm possession, and carrying a concealed weapon.
His bond has been set at $50,000 cash surety.
In response to the incident, the Battle Creek Police Department and Battle Creek Public Schools issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the event's proximity to the high school.
They emphasized that while the conflict originated outside of school, its occurrence near the campus is troubling.
To enhance student safety, the police department has increased its presence around the high school, implementing enhanced patrols during dismissal and other high-traffic times.
Additionally, on-site counselors and community partners are available to support students and staff affected by the incident.
