District Implements Immediate Measures to Safeguard Students and Staff |
In response to a recent shooting incident near Battle Creek Central High School, the district has announced a series of enhanced security measures aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff.
The incident occurred just north of the high school campus, located at 100 W. Van Buren St., when a student was injured as an unintended victim during an altercation between two groups. The student received prompt medical attention and was released shortly thereafter.
In a joint statement, Battle Creek Public Schools and the Battle Creek Police Department condemned the violence, emphasizing that while the event was not school-related, its proximity to the campus is deeply concerning.
Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Carter expressed the district's commitment to student safety, stating, "Community conflicts that spill into areas near our schools have a lasting impact on our students, creating fear and emotional harm." She further asserted that the district will not tolerate behaviors that threaten the well-being of children.
To address these concerns, the district is implementing several immediate actions:
Increased Safety Measures: The police department will enhance its presence around the high school, including intensified patrols during dismissal and other high-traffic times, to ensure students feel secure in and around school grounds.
Student Support: On-site counselors and community partners from Summit Pointe and Grace Health are available to provide support to students affected by the incident.
Staff Support: Resources are also being made available to school staff to assist them during this challenging time.
Out of an abundance of caution, the two students involved in the initial altercation have been removed from school pending the ongoing investigation.
Police Chief Shannon Bagley emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, "Weâre doing everything we can to protect our kids and our community, and to ensure those responsible are held fully accountable."
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Battle Creek Police Department or report information anonymously through Silent Observer.
These proactive steps reflect the district's unwavering commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. |
