Voters to decide on term length changes for city commissioners and mayor

Battle Creek neighbors have an important opportunity to shape local government this spring. A special election on Tuesday, May 5 gives voters the chance to weigh in on a proposed charter amendment that would change term lengths for city commissioners and the mayor.
This election matters because it directly affects how long our local leaders serve and how quickly new voices can join the City Commission. Your vote helps determine the future of leadership in our community.
How to Vote
You have two ways to participate in this election:
Vote in person on Election Day. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5. You can find your polling location and view a sample ballot at mi.gov/vote.
Vote absentee. If you requested an absentee ballot, the City Clerk has already mailed them to voters on the Permanent Ballot List and to those who submitted an application. Remember, all absentee ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The city recommends using an election drop box rather than mailing at this point.
Three Elections This Year
Mark your calendars, because 2026 brings three opportunities to vote in Battle Creek:
• Tuesday, May 5 ... Special election for charter amendment
Note that the nine-day early voting period will be available for the August and November elections, but not for the May special election.
For more election information, visit the City Clerk's election page.
