Battle Creek's Riverside Golf Club Faces Potential Rezoning for Mixed-Use Development. What Do You Think About It? |
City officials to decide on transforming historic golf course into residential and industrial spaces |
Battle Creek's Riverside Golf Club, a cherished 18-hole course with nearly a century of history, may soon undergo a significant transformation.
City officials are considering a rezoning proposal that could repurpose the 134-acre property into a mixed-use development featuring residential and industrial spaces.
In a recent meeting, the Battle Creek City Commission adopted an ordinance to conditionally rezone parcels south of West Columbia Avenue.
This move aims to facilitate light industrial development alongside single and multifamily residential housing, aligning with the city's master plan to attract future investment.
While specific development plans are yet to be finalized, the rezoning is intended to create new job opportunities and address the city's housing shortage.
Planning Administrator Darcy Schmitt emphasized the importance of community input, noting that residents are keen to ensure any future development is compatible with the neighborhood's character.
Some community members have expressed concerns about potential traffic increases and the impact on property values.
To address these issues, the proposed plan includes green space buffers and a mix of housing options to mitigate the impact on existing residential areas.
The developer is expected to submit the rezoning request by September 10, with the planning commission set to make its recommendation to city leaders two weeks later.
As the decision approaches, residents and golfers alike reflect on the potential changes to this historic site.
Golfer Jayce McCowan shared his sentiments, stating, "This course has been here for a long time, and a lot of people love to golf here. It would just suck to see it leave."
Schmitt acknowledged the challenges posed by the property's topography and lack of utility hookups but expressed confidence that proper engineering could address these issues.
As Battle Creek stands on the brink of this significant decision, the community remains engaged, balancing the preservation of its heritage with the pursuit of growth and development. |
