Board of Commissioners approves new public health fee, road engineering agreement, and chip seal projects throughout the county.

The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners approved several measures during its June 4 meeting, including updates to the public health fee schedule, road engineering agreements, and foreclosure prevention services, according to a community announcement.
$20 Sports Physicals Now AvailableOne notable change is the addition of a $20 sports physical fee to the Calhoun County Public Health Department's service offerings. This aims to provide residents with a convenient and affordable way to obtain physicals required for school athletics and activities.
For families with student athletes, this new service offers a cost-effective option compared to private medical providers, making it easier for students to meet participation requirements for sports and other school activities.
Road Engineering Funding SecuredThe board also approved an engineering reimbursement agreement for the Calhoun County Road Department. This agreement provides $10,000 per year from the Michigan Department of Transportation to road agencies that have licensed professional engineers on staff.
The funding helps offset the county's costs for transportation infrastructure planning and project development, ensuring Calhoun County can maintain and improve its road network effectively.
Foreclosure Prevention Services StrengthenedIn addition, commissioners approved a staffing request for the Calhoun County Treasurer's Office to strengthen foreclosure prevention services. This enhancement will provide additional support for residents facing housing insecurity and potential property loss.
Summer Road Work UnderwaySummer road work season is now underway across Calhoun County. One of the most visible projects residents will see over the coming months is chip seal projects. Chip sealing is a surface treatment that helps preserve roadways, extend pavement life, and address wear before more costly repairs are needed.
This year, the Calhoun County Road Department will complete chip seal and fog seal operations on roads throughout the county. Work is expected to continue through August and will require temporary road closures and brief access restrictions in some areas.
As construction activity increases throughout the summer, residents are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time when needed, and slow down in work zones. A complete list of roads scheduled for chip seal operations and other construction projects is available from the Calhoun County Road Department.
Parks and Recreation UpdatesThe Calhoun County Parks and Recreation Commission met at Kimball Pines Park on June 4, combining its regular meeting with a walk-through of the park. Commissioners received updates on current Parks Department activities, including progress on Parks Millage-funded projects, ongoing applications for Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grants, and other park and recreation initiatives throughout the county.
Economic Development ProgressThe Calhoun County Economic Development Corporation met on June 4 and recommended to the Board of Commissioners the appointment of a new member for the board. Members also received a department report including updates on the county's new draft Master Plan and other projects impacting economic development efforts throughout Calhoun County.
Brownfield Redevelopment AuthorityThe Calhoun County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority also met last week, approving its bylaws and recommending a new board member for appointment. The authority received a department report that included a draft BRA application approval procedure.
