Battle Creek's Celebration of Rock Legend Earns Top Recognition |
The Del Shannon Weekend, a four-day festival celebrating the life and music of rock icon Del Shannon, has been named the Historical Event of the Year by the Historical Society of Michigan.
This prestigious accolade was announced during the society's 151st Annual Michigan History Conference, held from September 26 to 28 at Alpena Community College.
Organized by Michael Delaware, a board member and marketing director for the Battle Creek Regional History Museum, the event serves as the museum's primary fundraiser and stands as the largest history-related gathering in Battle Creek.
Accepting the award on behalf of the museum was board vice president T.R. Shaw Jr.
The celebration honored Del Shannon, born Charles Westover, who composed his hit song "Runaway" while residing in Battle Creek.
The event also paid tribute to local Motown artists who performed in the city during the 1950s and 1960s at venues like the Hi-Lo Club and El Grotto Lounge, often referred to as Michigan's Apollo Theatre.
Notably, the Del Shannon Weekend is the only event authorized by the Westover family and Del Shannon's estate.
It attracted music enthusiasts from several states and even the United Kingdom, where Shannon had a significant following.
Highlights included a tribute concert at Kellogg Arena featuring the Michigan-based band Glad All Over, with a Motown tribute by Detroit musician Rob Carter as the opening act.
Additional activities encompassed a benefit dinner and auction at the museum's History Education Center, a classic car show at Begg Park in Springfield, and a panel discussion with Shannon biographer Brian Young alongside family members of Battle Creek's Motown artists.
The Battle Creek Regional History Museum continues to expand its presence in the community.
With the completion of the History Education Center, the museum is progressing into its second phase of development to become a full-fledged institution.
