Michigan's food assistance programs prepare for increased need amid government shutdown |
Food banks across Michigan are preparing for a significant increase in demand as the ongoing government shutdown threatens the livelihoods of federal workers.
With the shutdown entering its second day, the White House has indicated potential mass layoffs of federal employees, raising concerns about permanent job losses.
Greta Faworski, associate director of Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, expressed readiness to support those affected.
"We're prepared that there may be an influx of individuals seeking food assistance," Faworski stated.
The uncertainty surrounding the duration of the shutdown poses challenges for both families and food banks.
"It could be a couple of days, it could be a month, and that really makes a huge impact on families of whether or not they're gonna really find themselves stretched or needing assistance," Faworski explained.
Compounding the issue, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently canceled approximately $4.3 million worth of food orders to Michigan, equating to more than 2 million meals.
This reduction affects essential items like poultry, cheese, and eggs, intensifying the strain on local food banks.
Despite these challenges, Faworski remains optimistic about the community's resilience.
"We would hate to know that someone is going without medicine or skipping a mortgage payment because they want to make sure people have food to eat," she said.
"Again, we're here for the community."
Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., continually accepting food and cash donations to support those in need.
As the situation evolves, food banks across the state are calling on community support to help bridge the gap during these uncertain times. |
