Spring Surge: Battle Creek Hits the 70s Next Week
Winter takes a back seat as a major warming trend brings spring-like air and April showers.
Battle Creek is finally shedding its winter coat! After months of arctic blasts and sub-zero nights, the weather pattern is shifting dramatically.
Starting Wednesday, March 4th, we begin a steady climb out of the 40s that will culminate in a record-threatening high of 73°F by next Tuesday.
The upcoming weekend is looking particularly spectacular for outdoor enthusiasts. Saturday will offer a pleasant 62°F under partly sunny skies...perfect for a stroll through Linear Park or catching up on yard work that’s been buried under snow.
While the clouds will thicken by Sunday, the mercury continues its upward trek, hitting 65°F.
However, this much warmth this early in the season often brings some moisture.
As we head into early next week, expect the return of "April showers" a month early.
Monday and Tuesday will likely be wet, with overcast skies and light rain showers, but the air will be so mild you won't even need your heavy parka.
It’s a true taste of spring for the Cereal City! Cereal City Weather Q&A
Q: With temperatures hitting 73°F, is it safe to start my garden early? A: While the air temperature is soaring, the ground is still quite cold from the winter freeze. It’s safe to start prepping your beds and perhaps planting some cold-hardy greens, but hold off on the sensitive flowers and tomatoes. Michigan is famous for "false springs," and a late-March frost is still a distinct possibility!
Q: Will the rain early next week be heavy enough to cause flooding with the melting snow? A: Most of the heavy snowpack has already thinned out, but the combination of rain and rapid melting could lead to some ponding in low-lying areas and a rise in local creek levels. Keep an eye on your gutters and storm drains to ensure they are clear of winter debris.
Q: Is this 70-degree jump a record for Battle Creek in early March? A: It’s definitely close! Typical highs for early March in Battle Creek are usually in the low 40s. Hitting 73°F is nearly 30 degrees above average. While we have hit the 70s in March before, seeing it this early in the month is a rare treat that we haven't seen in several years. |
