Community celebrates restoration of beloved 1902 barn venue

A beloved community space is back.
The historic Hayloft Theatre Barn in Portage has reopened, two years after an EF-2 tornado caused significant damage.
The barn was originally built in 1902 and relocated to Portage in 1992.
It has been a crown jewel for the community, hosting weddings, family reunions, and city festivals.
The Damage and Recovery
The May 7, 2024 tornado blew out both ends of the barn.
Wind and rain further damaged curtains and lighting inside.
For a while, city officials were not sure it could be saved.
Now the barn is fully restored with replaced beams and added supports.
Steel structures were added behind the beams and masked to look historic.
Grand Reopening Celebration
Portage Parks and Recreation hosted a free grand reopening event on Thursday from 5:30 to 9 PM.
The evening included a dedication ceremony for Leaf-A-Legacy supporters who helped restore trees lost in the tornado.
Dinner and dancing began at 6 PM with dance instruction for all skill levels.
City COO Adam Herringa said it is a great feeling to have this treasure back in business.
