ICE Arrests at Immigration Check-Ins Surge in Michigan

Immigrants Face Increased Detention Risks During Routine Appointments

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has significantly increased arrests of non-criminal immigrants during routine check-ins in Michigan.

In January 2025, ICE detained 85 individuals in the state, with 19% having no criminal charges.

By early June, the national percentage of non-criminal arrests nearly doubled, rising from 21% to 47%.

This shift reflects a broader federal strategy to intensify deportation efforts.

In Grand Rapids, reports have emerged of ICE detaining individuals during scheduled check-ins at the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP) office.

Advocates describe these arrests as a breach of trust, as individuals complying with ICE requirements are now facing unexpected detentions.

Such actions have led to increased fear within immigrant communities.

Christine Sauvé of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center noted a sharp rise in arrests at ICE check-ins and immigration court hearings across the state.

She emphasized that this trend began earlier in other states but is now becoming more frequent in Michigan.

Local law enforcement agencies are also feeling the strain.

Many Michigan sheriffs report being overwhelmed and unable to assist ICE in rounding up immigrants.

They cite limited resources and legal authority as primary constraints.

As ICE's enforcement tactics evolve, immigrants are advised to stay informed about their rights.

Legal experts recommend consulting with attorneys before attending check-ins and being prepared for potential detention scenarios.

The landscape of immigration enforcement is rapidly changing, making awareness and preparedness crucial.

Community organizations continue to advocate for fair treatment and transparency in immigration proceedings.

They stress the importance of balancing enforcement with respect for human rights and due process.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing debates about the best approaches to immigration enforcement in Michigan and nationwide.
