Ice, Wind, and Snow Trigger 25 Crashes and Slide-Offs in West Michigan |
Treacherous conditions lead to multiple accidents, including a flipped vehicle on US-131 |
West Michigan drivers faced hazardous conditions on Friday as a combination of ice, wind, and snow led to numerous accidents across the region.
Michigan State Police reported responding to 25 crashes and slide-offs throughout the day.
At approximately 11 a.m., a significant accident in Kalamazoo County resulted in the closure of southbound US-131 at D Avenue.
Motorists were rerouted at Exit 44, causing extensive traffic delays and a line of vehicles stretching for miles along the highway.
One local driver, Logan Eichelberd, observed, "I think we passed about two or three cars in the ditch."
He added, "Overall, people are just taking it easy because they are seeing all of these cars in the ditch, which is good that people are taking it seriously."
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) confirmed that the southbound lanes of US-131 at D Avenue reopened at 2 p.m.
However, shortly after 2 p.m., another incident occurred when a vehicle flipped onto its side after sliding off northbound US-131 near Stadium Drive.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding any injuries resulting from this crash.
The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for central and west Michigan, warning of gusts up to 45 mph.
These strong winds, combined with freezing temperatures and snowfall, created perilous driving conditions throughout the region.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant as winter weather continues to impact roadways.
Staying informed about current weather conditions and heeding advisories can help ensure safety during this challenging season. |
