KCC Library Fund Adds Hands-On Study Tools in Battle Creek
The Donald Vinkemulder Fund honors a former librarian while supporting health and arts students

A donor-created fund at Kellogg Community College is helping the Morris Library add hands-on study tools for students, while the college is inviting other supporters to build similar project funds.
KCC alumna Lois Brown established the Donald Vinkemulder Fund to support library initiatives that reinforce classroom and laboratory learning, especially for students studying health and the arts.
The fund honors Donald Vinkemulder, who served as KCC’s head librarian from 1967 through 1987 and supervised Brown when she worked in the library as a student during the 1970s.
Recent purchases supported by the fund include anatomical models, magnetic molecular models, calculators, sensory lamps and a Wacom drawing tablet.
KCC Library Services Director Jenn Washburn said the equipment gives students a place to experiment, practice skills and use learning aids in spaces they already rely on for projects and study time.
Brown said project funds appealed to her because they offer another way to help students reach their goals, separate from traditional scholarships.
KCC says donors can establish an endowed project fund with a minimum gift of $10,000, creating a long-term source of support for a department, program or initiative.
Supporters can work with the KCC Foundation and their chosen department to identify needs that strengthen programs, enrich learning or provide resources beyond the classroom.
The Foundation also accepts gifts for existing college projects and initiatives, including contributions made online, by mail or over the phone.
The two fund stories first appeared in the September 2026 edition of BruIN magazine and were published by KCC Daily on November 2nd, 2026.
What does the Donald Vinkemulder Fund support? It supports hands-on study aids and other learning resources at KCC’s Morris Library, primarily benefiting students in health and arts programs.
Who was Donald Vinkemulder? He was KCC’s head librarian from 1967 through 1987 and was remembered by donor Lois Brown as an influential mentor.
