Incident prompts disciplinary action and community reflection on sportsmanship |
During a junior varsity football game on Thursday, September 18, 2025, between Lakeshore High School and Kalamazoo Central High School, a Lakeshore player sustained serious spinal injuries following an on-field incident.
In the third quarter, a Kalamazoo Central player tackled the Lakeshore athlete, identified as 15-year-old Colton Mims. After the initial tackle, the Kalamazoo player reportedly jumped onto Mims, resulting in two spinal fractures. Mims was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
âAt first, I was like, âIs that my son?â And as soon as it clicked that it was, I couldnât be stopped,â said Mims' mother, Courtney Mims. âI had to go down there. Iâve never felt anything like it.â
Following the incident, Kalamazoo Central High School released a statement condemning the player's actions, describing them as a âpoor choiceâ that does not reflect the values of their football program or school community. The school confirmed that the player involved is facing disciplinary action in accordance with the Kalamazoo Public Schools Student Code of Conduct and MHSAA regulations.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association acknowledged the situation, stating that they are working with both schools to address the matter internally.
As Mims begins his recovery, his future in football remains uncertain. His mother expressed concern over the impact of the incident, noting that for these young athletes, the game is a significant part of their lives.
The Lakeshore community has rallied around Mims, dedicating their subsequent varsity game victory to him. This incident has sparked broader discussions about player safety and sportsmanship in high school athletics. |
