Left for Dead: Battle Creek Miracle Puppy 'Ozzy' Journeys Toward Recovery, Adoption

Rescued from a garbage bag, Ozzy's resilience inspires a community

Exclusive

In mid-August, a heart-wrenching discovery was made in Battle Creek, Michigan: a puppy, later named Ozzy, was found suffocating inside a tied-off garbage bag discarded along the roadside.

Rescuers believe the bag was thrown from a moving vehicle, and a passerby, hearing his muffled cries, intervened just in time.

Initially in critical condition, Ozzy was entrusted to the care of All Species Kinship (A.S.K.), a local nonprofit dedicated to animal rescue and rehabilitation.

Under their vigilant care, Ozzy has shown remarkable progress.

According to Sophia DiPietro, A.S.K.'s executive director, Ozzy is gaining weight and becoming more lively.

However, he remains cautious around humans, indicating a journey ahead in rebuilding trust.

Medical evaluations revealed that Ozzy suffered significant trauma from his ordeal.

He has lost his hearing, likely due to brain damage, but there's a silver lining: his vision, once thought to be entirely lost, has partially returned.

DiPietro remains hopeful that with continued medical attention, his sight may further improve.

Another positive development is Ozzy's regained ability to control his bladder and his newfound independence in eating.

These milestones are promising signs of his ongoing rehabilitation.

While Ozzy's future remains uncertain, the goal is to prepare him for adoption.

DiPietro emphasizes that it will be several months before he's ready, as further medical evaluations and treatments are necessary.

In a tragic turn, less than a week after Ozzy's rescue, another puppy, bearing a striking resemblance to him, was found deceased along a Battle Creek road.

It's suspected they were siblings, though DNA results are pending to confirm this.

The case is under active investigation, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.

Animal cruelty incidents have seen a concerning rise in Michigan.

In 2017, the Michigan State Police reported 123 such cases; by 2023, that number had escalated to 913.

Penalties for offenders vary based on severity, ranging from 93 days in jail to up to four years in prison.

DiPietro underscores the importance of community support and awareness.

Organizations like A.S.K., along with others such as the Animal Rescue Project in Kalamazoo and SPCA of Southwest Michigan, offer non-judgmental assistance to those unable to care for their pets.

She encourages individuals to reach out for help rather than resorting to abandonment.

To celebrate Ozzy's resilience and the community's support, a puppy shower is being planned in his honor.

The event will feature a breed reveal based on his DNA test results, exclusive Ozzy merchandise, and an opportunity for the community to meet the miracle pup.

Details will be announced soon, and all are invited to join in honoring Ozzy's journey.
