Michigan AG Nessel Seeks Federal Crackdown on Illegal Offshore Casinos
Michigan Attorney General Nessel Urges Federal Action Against Illegal Offshore Casinos |
State's top law enforcement official seeks collaboration to protect Michigan's gaming industry and consumers |
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is intensifying efforts to combat illegal offshore casinos that threaten the state's regulated gaming industry.
In a bold move, Nessel, alongside her counterparts from all 50 states, has called upon U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to take decisive action against these unlicensed operators.
Despite Michigan's licensed online casinos generating substantial revenue, the proliferation of offshore gambling sites poses a significant challenge.
These unregulated platforms not only siphon potential tax revenue but also expose consumers to risks such as unreliable withdrawals and lack of essential protections.
In recent months, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has been proactive in addressing this issue.
In March 2025, the MGCB issued cease-and-desist orders to five offshore online casinos, including BetWhale Casino and Black Lotus Casino, for violating state gaming laws.
These sites offered a variety of casino games and sports betting without proper licensing.
By May 2025, the MGCB expanded its enforcement actions, targeting 14 additional unlicensed operators such as BetFlip and Casino Extreme.
These platforms were found to be unlawfully offering internet gaming and sports betting to Michigan residents.
Attorney General Nessel's appeal to the federal government underscores the magnitude of the problem.
She emphasizes that without federal intervention, states face an uphill battle in curbing the influence of offshore gambling entities.
Consumers are urged to exercise caution and ensure they engage with licensed Michigan online casinos.
These regulated platforms not only contribute to the state's economy but also provide a safer and more reliable gaming experience.
As the battle against illegal offshore casinos continues, the collaboration between state and federal authorities will be crucial in safeguarding both the industry and its patrons. |
