Michigan and Western Michigan in Talks to Open 2026 Football Season in Germany

Historic International Matchup Proposed for August 29, 2026, at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt

The University of Michigan and Western Michigan University are in advanced discussions to kick off the 2026 football season with a historic international game in Frankfurt, Germany.

The proposed matchup is slated for August 29, 2026, at Deutsche Bank Park, a 55,000-seat stadium known for hosting Bundesliga's Eintracht Frankfurt and several NFL games.

This would mark the first time the Wolverines play outside North America, expanding their global presence.

Warde Manuel, Michigan's Athletic Director, emphasized the significance of this opportunity, stating, "We are in advanced discussions to create this first-of-its-kind opportunity for our student-athletes and fans."

He highlighted Michigan's worldwide brand and the unique chance to introduce "Go Blue" to fans in Germany.

Head Coach Sherrone Moore echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement about the educational and cultural experiences this game could offer players.

He noted the program's previous international trips to Italy, France, and South Africa, emphasizing the value of exposing student-athletes to diverse cultures.

Originally scheduled for September 5, 2026, at Michigan Stadium, this game would be the first time Michigan faces a Mid-American Conference team at a neutral site.

Western Michigan's Athletic Director, Dan Bartholomae, highlighted the historic nature of this potential game, stating, "It's exciting to be in these advanced discussions that present a historic moment not only for our football program but for Western Michigan University as our national brand continues to grow."

He emphasized the unparalleled experience this game would provide for the program and the university.

Head Coach Lance Taylor of Western Michigan expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to play on an international stage against a storied program like Michigan.

He highlighted the unique competitive and educational experiences this game would offer student-athletes, providing cultural exposure and lasting memories.

Deutsche Bank Park, also known as Waldstadion, has a rich history of hosting major sporting events, including two NFL regular-season games in 2023.

The stadium's modern facilities and passionate fan base make it an ideal venue for this groundbreaking college football game.

As discussions progress, both universities are committed to finalizing details to ensure a successful and memorable experience for players, fans, and the broader college football community.

This potential game underscores the growing trend of international college football matchups, aiming to expand the sport's global reach and provide student-athletes with unique opportunities.

Fans eagerly await further announcements as the 2026 season approaches.
