Michigan Celebrates America's 250th with Fireworks, History Tours, and Community Events

Michigan communities are coming together to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary through the America 250MI initiative, with events ranging from fireworks displays to historical reenactments and public readings of the Declaration of Independence.

The statewide celebration includes coordinated efforts across dozens of communities, with significant funding and planning invested to make this semiquincentennial anniversary memorable for residents of all ages.

$2 Million in Grants for Local Celebrations

The America 250MI committee has provided $2 million in grants to local museums and historical societies across the state. This funding supports a wide variety of events designed to bring communities together and reflect on America's history and future.

From public readings of the Declaration of Independence in seven languages to museum exhibits and concerts, the celebrations aim to engage residents in meaningful ways. You can find a full calendar of events at america250mi.org/calendar.

Synchronized Declaration Readings on July 8

One of the centerpiece events is a coordinated reading of the Declaration of Independence scheduled for July 8 at 6 p.m.... the exact time and date when the document was first read to the public 250 years ago.

Approximately 60 Michigan communities will participate in the synchronized readings, which will take place in seven or more languages. These readings are part of more than 600 similar events happening across the country and around the globe.

"We're bringing back the spirit of America through this simple act of reading the Declaration of Independence, that all men are created equal, with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," said Robert Doran-Brockway, project director of America 250MI.
