Michigan Company to Lay Off 400 Employees Amid AI Integration, Impacting 200 in West Michigan |
Grand Rapids-based firm announces significant workforce reduction as part of technological transformation |
Acrisure, a global insurance brokerage and fintech company headquartered in Grand Rapids, has announced plans to eliminate 400 accounting positions in early 2026. Approximately half of these layoffs will affect employees in West Michigan.
The decision stems from the company's ongoing integration of artificial intelligence technologies, which are set to automate substantial portions of the accounting functions currently performed by staff. CEO Greg Williams described the move as "painful" but essential for maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving industry.
Founded in 2005, Acrisure has experienced remarkable growth, expanding its revenue from $38 million to nearly $5 billion over the past decade. The company employs around 20,000 people globally, with 2,000 based in Michigan and nearly 1,000 in the Grand Rapids area.
In 2020, Acrisure acquired the AI-powered insurance practice of Tulco LLC in a $400 million deal, marking a significant step in its technological transformation. The forthcoming layoffs are a direct result of integrating this AI platform into the company's operations.
Williams emphasized that the layoffs are not indicative of financial distress but are part of a strategic effort to reallocate resources and invest in digital and AI services that will benefit clients, particularly small businesses. He acknowledged the contributions of the affected employees, stating, "They have been instrumental to our success and have given so much to our company and our community."
The company has assured that impacted employees will receive severance packages and comprehensive outplacement support. Despite the reductions, Acrisure remains committed to the Grand Rapids community and continues to hire for various roles in the region.
This development reflects a broader trend of AI-driven automation reshaping industries and the workforce, underscoring the need for companies to balance technological advancement with employee welfare. |
