SAFER by 2030 initiative targets speeding as summer travel increases across Battle Creek and statewide

Michigan police agencies are increasing speed enforcement efforts throughout July as part of a statewide campaign to reduce dangerous driving during the busy summer travel season. The initiative, led by Michigan State Police alongside local and county agencies, comes as new data shows speeding remains a significant factor in serious crashes across the state.
Key Facts About Speeding in Michigan:
The enforcement campaign is part of Michigan's broader SAFER by 2030 initiative, launched in December 2025 with a goal of reducing roadway fatalities by 30% by 2030. The initiative focuses on three key areas: awareness, engagement, and enforcement.
"Speeding is one of the most preventable causes of deadly crashes," said Alicia Sledge, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. "Exceeding the speed limit reduces reaction time, increases impact forces and raises the risk to all road users. Slowing down is one of the simplest and most effective ways to save lives."
Summer months bring increased travel and higher traffic volumes, raising risks for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists throughout Battle Creek and across Michigan. Law enforcement agencies will conduct focused patrols targeting speeding drivers during July.
"This coordinated enforcement effort is one way we're putting the initiative into action," Sledge added. "We urge drivers to obey speed limits, be extra cautious during this busy time and use patience behind the wheel."
The campaign is funded through federal traffic safety funds provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
