Understanding Michigan's School Bus Laws: What Drivers Need to Know

As the 2025-2026 school year begins, it's crucial for Michigan drivers to be aware of updated school bus safety regulations to ensure the protection of students.

With the commencement of the 2025-2026 academic year, Michigan's roads are once again bustling with school buses, transporting children to and from educational institutions.

It's imperative for drivers to understand and adhere to the state's school bus laws to safeguard our young learners.

Recent legislative changes have introduced stricter penalties for those who fail to comply with these regulations.

In December 2024, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Public Acts 161, 162, and 163 into law, enhancing the enforcement of school bus safety measures.

These acts permit the installation of stop-arm cameras on school buses, capturing footage of vehicles that illegally pass when the bus is stopped with its red lights flashing.

Violators caught on these cameras face civil fines ranging from $100 to $500.

Notably, the revenue from these fines is allocated directly to the school districts, earmarked for transportation safety initiatives.

According to the Michigan State Police, drivers who pass a stopped school bus with its red lights activated are committing a civil infraction.

Penalties include fines between $100 and $500, with the possibility of increased fines in school zones.

More severe consequences apply if such violations result in injury or death.

In 2023, Michigan reported 988 crashes involving school buses, resulting in five fatalities.

Additionally, 73 incidents occurred at school bus stops, leading to 31 injuries.

These statistics underscore the critical need for drivers to exercise caution and comply with school bus safety laws.

To further promote student safety, the Michigan State Police initiated "Operation Safe Stop" during School Bus Safety Week in October 2024.

This enforcement campaign targeted drivers who illegally passed stopped school buses, emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic laws designed to protect children.

As schools reopen, drivers are reminded to remain vigilant.

When a school bus displays flashing red lights and extends its stop arm, vehicles must stop at least 20 feet away and cannot proceed until the bus resumes motion or the lights are turned off.

By following these regulations, we can collectively ensure the safety of Michigan's students as they travel to and from school.
