Michigan to Ramp Up DUI Patrols Ahead of Labor Day Weekend

Statewide 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' Campaign Targets Impaired Driving

As the Labor Day weekend approaches, Michigan State Police and local law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to combat impaired driving.

From August 15 through September 1, the annual 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign will be in full effect, aiming to reduce alcohol- and drug-related traffic incidents.

During this period, motorists can expect increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints across the state.

According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP), in 2023, nearly 41% of traffic fatalities in Michigan involved alcohol or drugs.

Specifically, there were 8,817 alcohol-involved crashes resulting in 297 fatalities, and 2,250 drug-involved crashes leading to 256 fatalities.

Over the Labor Day holiday weekends from 2019 to 2023, 44 drivers lost their lives in traffic crashes, with 43.2% of these fatalities involving impaired driving.

These statistics underscore the critical need for heightened enforcement during this period.

Alicia Sledge, director of the OHSP, emphasized the importance of making responsible choices.

“Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after you’ve been drinking or taking drugs endangers you, your passengers, and everyone else on the road,” she stated.

“We are encouraging people to make the right choice and find a sober ride home if they plan on consuming substances that impair driving abilities.”

In Michigan, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher.

However, drivers can be arrested at any BAC level if an officer believes they are impaired.

To raise awareness, the OHSP is funding a statewide media campaign highlighting the dangers of impaired driving.

This initiative is supported by federal traffic safety funds provided by the United States Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As the holiday weekend nears, officials urge all Michiganders to plan ahead and ensure they have a safe, sober ride home.

By making responsible decisions, we can all contribute to safer roads and prevent unnecessary tragedies.
