Mike Rogers Urges Detroit Mayor to Seek Federal Assistance Amid Crime Concerns. Do you think we need military in Detroit? |
Former Congressman Calls for Presidential Support Despite City's Crime Reduction |
In a recent statement, former U.S. Representative and Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers has called on Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to request federal intervention from President Donald Trump to address the city's crime rates.
Rogers emphasized the need for additional support, stating, "The numbers don't lie: Detroit has become a hub for violent crime. We have got to make our cities safe again. The Mayor of Detroit should be on the phone with the President now calling for backup."
However, recent data indicates a significant decline in Detroit's violent crime. In 2024, the city recorded 203 homicides, a 19% decrease from the previous year and the lowest since 1965. Non-fatal shootings also dropped by 25%, and carjackings decreased by 15% during the same period.
Mayor Duggan responded to Rogers' remarks, highlighting the city's progress: "Rogers is proving himself just another uninformed, grandstanding politician. The historic drop in Detroit crime in recent years has come from the efforts of serious law enforcement professionals, not from non-serious politicians like Rogers."
The mayor credited the decline to collaborative efforts between local, state, and federal agencies, as well as community-based initiatives like ShotStoppers, which have contributed to the reduction in violent crime.
Despite the improvements, Rogers maintains that federal assistance could further enhance public safety in Detroit. The debate underscores differing perspectives on the necessity and effectiveness of federal intervention in local crime management. |
