Municipal Government Leadership in Battle Creek, MI

Announcing a new fire chief appointment and assistant city manager

🔥 Trending

A significant shift in Battle Creek's municipal government leadership is underway, with two veteran city employees stepping into crucial roles.

The city has officially announced the promotions of Marcie Gillette to assistant city manager and Bush McCarthy to fire chief, a move that signals a strong commitment to internal expertise and long-term public service.

This decision underscores a philosophy of nurturing leadership from within the city's own ranks.

City Manager Amanda Zimmerlin noted that while external candidates can bring fresh perspectives, these appointments reflect the strength of investing in individuals who have dedicated their careers to serving the Battle Creek community.

Gillette, the newly appointed assistant city manager, is a testament to this approach.

Her tenure with the city dates back to 1998, most recently serving as the community services director since 2015.

This extensive background gives her a deep, almost unparalleled, institutional knowledge of city operations.

Her leadership is expected to bring stability and a steady hand during a period of transition and growth for the city.

Gillette will be replacing Ted Dearing, who is retiring at the end of April after more than three decades of service to Battle Creek.

Zimmerlin praised Gillette's sound judgment and unwavering commitment to public service throughout her career.

Meanwhile, the Battle Creek Fire Department will also see a change at the top with a new fire chief appointment.

Bush McCarthy, who joined the department in 2008 and recently served as battalion chief, will now take the helm.

His appointment follows a period of interim leadership under Police Chief Shannon Bagley, which began after a departmental review in September 2024 indicated a change was necessary.

The move to appoint a permanent chief is seen as a critical step toward stabilizing the department's long-term vision.

McCarthy's long tenure with the department and his experience, which includes serving as a master sergeant in the Michigan Air National Guard, make him well-suited for the role, according to city officials.

These leadership changes come as Battle Creek tackles significant community initiatives, including major housing development projects.

Just recently, plans were announced to redevelop the former K-Mart site into a mixed-use campus with 80 new apartments and a childcare facility, addressing critical local needs.

This project, supported by a state grant, represents a more than $30 million investment in the city's future.

The success of such ambitious projects will undoubtedly rely on the steady guidance of experienced municipal leaders like Gillette and McCarthy.

Their deep roots in the community and understanding of its challenges are seen as invaluable assets as Battle Creek navigates issues from infrastructure upgrades, like replacing century-old water mains, to expanding economic opportunities for all residents.

The pressure is on for this new leadership team to deliver progress that residents can see and feel.

With a focus on internal talent, Battle Creek is betting on familiar faces to lead it into a new chapter of growth and stability.
