Calhoun County Sheriff's Office apprehends suspect; accomplice remains at large |
Authorities in Springfield, Michigan, have arrested a 28-year-old man following break-ins at two local car dealerships, while a second suspect remains at large.
Early Monday morning, deputies responded to reports of burglaries at Battle Creek Honda and Sunshine Toyota on West Dickman Road. Suspects had breached secured areas, targeting approximately ten vehicles and stealing various items.
Despite collecting evidence and surveillance footage, initial searches yielded no suspects. Consequently, extra patrols were requested.
During a proactive property check early Tuesday, deputies discovered burglary tools within a secured lot at Sunshine Toyota. They encountered two men attempting to break into vehicles; both fled upon detection.
After a brief chase, one suspect—a 28-year-old from Battle Creek—was apprehended. The second individual evaded capture despite an extensive search.
A subsequent search of a residence on North 23rd Street near Avenue A uncovered several stolen items linked to the earlier break-ins.
The arrested individual faces multiple charges, including breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, and felony malicious destruction of property. He was also on probation for controlled substance-related offenses.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Lt. Curtis Smith at 269-781-0880 or Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
These incidents highlight a troubling trend of organized vehicle thefts across Michigan. In May 2024, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the arrest of six individuals linked to a criminal organization responsible for stealing over 400 vehicles valued at approximately $8 million in Southeast Michigan. The group targeted new vehicle storage lots, dealerships, and residences, with stolen vehicles often used in further criminal activities.
Similarly, in April 2024, the Williams Brothers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Dundee reported the theft of four vehicles, cash, and numerous Michigan registration plates. Surveillance footage showed five masked individuals breaking into the dealership and accessing safes containing keys and cash.
These cases underscore the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in combating vehicle-related crimes. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities and ensure their vehicles are secured to deter potential thefts. |
