In a significant recovery operation, the Battle Creek Police Department retrieved approximately 3,000 pounds of stolen refined lead bricks buried in a residential yard on Elsmere Street.
The investigation began after a burglary on July 18 at a local business resulted in the theft of these substantial lead bricks.
On August 12, officers executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence, leading to the discovery of the stolen materials concealed underground.
Assistance from the Battle Creek Department of Public Works and Semco Energy was crucial in safely extracting and transporting the heavy lead bricks.
All recovered property has been returned to the rightful owner.
A 60-year-old Battle Creek man was arrested and is currently held at the Calhoun County Jail on charges of receiving and concealing stolen property.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather information related to the case.
In related news, the city has been actively working to address lead exposure concerns.
