Governor Whitmer Announces Disaster Declaration to Assist Affected Communities |
President Donald Trump has approved a federal disaster declaration to aid Northern Michigan's recovery from the devastating ice storm that struck in late March 2025.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the approval on July 23, emphasizing the importance of this support for the region's rebuilding efforts.
The ice storm, which began on March 28 and lasted through March 30, caused extensive damage across the northern Lower Peninsula.
Communities faced widespread power outages, impassable roads due to fallen trees, and significant infrastructure damage.
In response, Governor Whitmer declared a state of emergency for 12 counties, including Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, and Presque Isle.
State Representative Parker Fairbairn spearheaded efforts to secure funding for recovery.
He introduced a $75 million state budget plan, House Bill 4328, aiming to leverage an additional $225 million in federal funds, totaling $300 million for the affected communities.
Fairbairn highlighted the resilience of Northern Michigan residents, stating, "Our Northern Michigan communities are doing everything they can to address historic damages, but funding is running short, and they need help."
The Michigan State Police estimated recovery efforts would cost upwards of $200 million, a figure expected to rise as assessments continue.
In May, the U.S. Small Business Administration granted a disaster declaration for Cheboygan County and its contiguous counties, enabling homeowners, renters, and businesses to apply for financial assistance to repair or replace damaged property.
Residents and business owners in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362).
As recovery efforts progress, state and federal officials continue to collaborate to ensure that Northern Michigan communities receive the necessary support to rebuild and recover from the historic ice storm. |
