A major water infrastructure project in Battle Creek is moving forward after a one-week delay to help neighbors affected by last week is tornado in Union City.
The Post-Franklin neighborhood water main and lead service line replacement work was originally scheduled to begin on March 16. However, the project contractor, Hoffman Bros., is currently assisting with tornado cleanup efforts in Union City following the deadly storm that struck the area.
The city recognized that the community would want to support Union City at this difficult time, and residents have been patient while the contractor helps with recovery work. The project is now scheduled to begin on Monday, March 23.
What the Project Includes
This extensive project will replace aging water mains, remove lead and galvanized service lines, and rebuild streets and sidewalks in the affected area.
Work will begin on several streets in the Post Addition neighborhood. The contractor will start on Lathrop Avenue from Main Street to Academy Street, Post Avenue from Main Street to Caine Street, and Douglas Street from Cliff Street to Post Avenue.
The project will take place over two construction seasons. Approximately 75 percent of the work will be completed by October 31, 2026. The remaining work will be finished in spring and summer 2027.
Construction hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with occasional Saturday work possible.
What Residents Need to Do
Neighbors who have not yet returned their Lead Service Consent Form are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Crews cannot reconnect lead or galvanized service lines to the new water main. Water service may be interrupted for properties without a completed form once work reaches each block.
For questions or to request a new consent form, residents can contact the City at 269.966.3311.
